History or San Gorgonio High School

San Gorgonio High School first opened its doors in 1965 under the leadership of Principal George E. Lucas. Located at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains, San Gorgonio is named after Mt. San Gorgonio, which reaches higher than any other peak in Southern California.  

San Gorgonio High School is a comprehensive high school in the San Bernardino City Unified School District. The school motto, “Expect Excellence - Everyone, Everywhere, Every Time,” was developed in the 2002-03 school year and is the inspiration toward reaching the highest limits of educational excellence. We are the Spartans and proudly wear Columbian blue, black, and white.

The school gained some notoriety when the 1,600-meter girls' relay team from San Gorgonio High set a U.S. scholastic record in 1979. The summary looked like a typographical error: 3:44.1 (Howard-Howard-Howard-Howard) but neither the remarkable time nor the names were wrong. It was instead a breakthrough by what could be called the first and the fastest family of U.S. women's track—the Howard sisters: Artra (18), Sherri (17), Tina (16), and Denean (15).

School Colors

Blue, black, and white are San Gorgonio High School’s colors. On occasion, “spirit days” will be held. On these days, students and staff are encouraged to wear school colors to demonstrate pride in the school, to promote spirit, and to support athletic teams.

WASC Schoolwide Focus Goals

1. Develop site-based common formative assessments that align with the CAASPP with a focus on English and mathematics.
2. Improve the effectiveness of our Professional Development Teams.
3. Increase parent, student, staff, and community engagement in the schoolwide decision-making process.
4. SGHS needs to continue using multiple forms of data to build a support system and resources for our low-performing populations to be successful.
